Pixels and PDF's

Another one of my many learning mistakes was re-sizing a photo for a PDF document I created. The file size was too big to email, so of course I made it smaller - by using the arrows at the sides of the photo to re-size it. But no matter how small I made it, the file size was too big. My husband says I have no concept of certain things, and file size is one of them. While attending the Picasa class, I had a light bulb moment and realized that I needed to crop the photo to get rid of pixels, not resize and keep the same number. (If you don't know what pixels are, look it up - my definition will only confuse you.) I don't know if this is a good analogy or not, but it's like taking 100 pounds of sand and when it's too heavy, folding it in half and wondering why it's still too much weight. Does that sound like a good example?

Picasa Download

After seeing all the great features of the Picasa program, I wanted to download it to my home computer - of course. To do this, you go to the Google site and click the "more" button (mine was in the top left corner) then you will see an option that says "photos". When you click it, you will be taken to a Picasa page that, had I bothered to read properly, sets up a Picasa photo sharing site for you online. The pictures from my blog automatically showed there and since I'm not inclined to put two and two together, I thought they were somehow uploaded from my hard drive. Being the private person that I am, I deleted them from this public site and didn't notice the warning that the photos would be deleted from my blog posts. I see you shaking your head and yes, I did have to edit each post and replace the pics (fortunately, not many). Because I like to make mistakes like this, you don't have to. Learning Picasa

I'm here in a computer class learning to use a photo editing package called Picasa. So far, so good. Nice and easy, works well with Blogger and it's a free program from Google! I'm learning to remove red-eye quickly, crop unwanted parts of the photo, and add special effects such as black and white, sepia, or collage. This program is a great way to add just the right photo to your blog. Got some cute photos like this one that you'd like to fix? Until next time, Carol
